ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HAIR

rosemary-EO-high-quality-long

Rosemary essential oil is suggested for promoting hair growth and stimulating hair follicles.  Mixed with other essential oils such as Lavender, Cederwood and Thyme can enhance the results.  As essential oils are highly concentrated liquids, they must never be used without being diluted. Carrier oils such as Jojoba oil, Almond oil and Apricot Kernel oil are particularly good for nourishing the scalp and blend well with the named essential oils.  The ratio amounts for the following recipe can be adjusted to suit your preference, as long as the total of drops add up to 12. For example if you like the smell of Lavender, increase the number of drops and add less of Rosemary.

35ml of Almond, Jojoba or Apricot kernel oil

2 drops Cederwood

3 drops Lavender

5 drops Rosemary

2 drops Thyme

Mix the above oils together and massage into your scalp. The minimum time to leave the mixture on is 1 hour. For enhanced results it can also be left on overnight, just make sure to put a towel over your pillow!

Safety note: Do a patch test before applying.

ALWAYS REFER TO HEALTH AND SAFETY WHEN USING ESSENTIAL OILS. DO NOT APPLY NEAT ESSENTIAL OILS TO SKIN. IF UNSURE SEEK ADVICE FROM A QUALIFIED AROMATHERAPIST

Healing Plant

healing_environment-500x332

Plants offer natural healing for the bod and mind. The following quote is taken from Green Medicine, written by Margaret Kreig. It wonderfully describes the discovery of the therapeutic properties of a plant to cure a patient.

I wonder what’s around the bend? said the explorer
I wonder what that plant is? said the collector
I wonder what’s in it? said the chemist
I wonder what activity it has? said the pharmacologist
I wonder if it’ll work in this case? said the physician
I hope she lives! said the father
Please God! said the mother
I think she’ll be alright in the morning, said the nurse.

Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy which involves using essential oils for balancing mental, physical and emotional well-being. Essential oils are concentrated liquids derived from plants, flowers, leaves, stems and trees. They are produced through the process of steam distillation or cold pressing. Essential oils vary in colour ranging from amber to yellowish, depending on which part of the plant the oil is derived from. The therapeutic effect of each essential oil varies from being calming, relaxing, uplifting to refreshing or stimulating.

Coconut oil deep conditioning treatment for hair

coconut-oil (1)

Massage a couple of tablespoons of the coconut oil into hair and scalp (You may need more for longer hair). It is easier to section your hair and then apply. If your coconut oil is in a solid form, melt it by placing the jar/bottle in warm water for a few mins (avoid using microwave). Allow the oil to absorb into hair for 20-30 minutes after application, for better results can also be left on overnight. The effectiveness of this treatment can be enhanced by adding a few drops of essential oils of your choice. A few suggestions are:

Mix 3 drops of Rosemary or Peppermint essential oil into per 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to stimulate circulation and promote hair growth.

Mix 3 drops of Tea Tree or Eucalyptus essential oil into per 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for dandruff, lice or dry scalp conditions.
